GIF animation

Overview

GIF file format is the most standard file format for images on the web, and stands for "Graphic Interchange Format". These files have a .gif file extension to the file name. Programs such as Microsoft's MsPaint and Photo Editor can create GIF files.

GIF animation is a "feature" of web browsers whereby a collection of GIF type images are played from one file, one after the other like a projector playing film, giving animation. It was discovered by chance early in Netscape's beta test program, and is now almost universally accepted by all web browsers. You do NOT need any additional programs or plug-ins to play GIF animation. GIF animation

Making your own GIF animation

You can make your own animation files. Infact we encourage you to do so! If you send it to us and we like it we will include it on gif43 and credit you! You can also include a brief message such as Happy Birthday Mathew, etc. Anything original or funny is of particular interest. (You can also enter GIF montages, see below.) To create GIF animation you need a GIF animation program, some of which can be obtained for free - see Credits & Links

To enter a GIF file to gif43 simply attach the file to an email and Email entry to gif43
If you are under fourteen years include your age. Note make sure when copying and pasting a GIF animation file that you do this OUTSIDE Word otherwise the file will just be a "static" gif file.

Interesting individual photos

We would prefer you make your own GIF animations or "montages" or slideshow (see below). However, if you have an exceptionally interesting photo you can send this to gif43 (as a GIF or JPEG file) and we may create a montage to include this e.g. of famous icons or legends, scientists, important historical events, paintings, etc.

GIF Montages

Overview

A "montage" here is a collection of still images shown one after the other or on top of each other such as a collection of photographs, like a "slideshow". The images may apper anywhere on the screen i.e. not necessarily overlapping each other, and one image may "dissolve" (i.e. melt) into the other.

The Marilyn collection gives a feeling of the wonder and absolute beauty of Marilyn Monroe. Note this inovative idea of GIF as photos is we beleive different to anything else on the web (at the moment others have lots of web pages which have to be individually loaded), but takes a total of 3MB of file space as the pictures are of high quality. QuickTime

Overview

A QuickTime file can be streamed down from the web site and at the same time played on your computer. To play a QuickTime movie file you must have QuickTime installed on your computer. It is likely to already been installed on your computer. If not, you can obtain a free download
Note if takes about twenty minutes to download the free version.

gif43 is divided two types of QuickTime files: showreels from actors, and showreels and film extracts etc from low budget film companies. If you do not have sufficient spare RAM (32MB or more) QuickTime may stop and start as it downloads, and only after it is replayed will it play the movie continiously. You can free some RAM by closing any unnecessary programs that may be running (e.g. by CLOSE+ALT+DELETE).
As some Quicktime files are large you may prefer to download the QuickTime files first, before playing them.

If you have previously downloaded a large QuickTime zip program file from Gif43 to disk, and want to later re-play, rather than downloading to disk again when given the option to save to the disk folder previously saved to, RIGHT_CLICK the file and Select OPEN to open the previously saved file. (If you prevously ran the WinZip program directly select NO when get message asking if want to overwrite as do not need to extract again.)

For zip downloaded files, if the QuickTime movie does not automatically play, CLICK the large middle button (whether a QuickTime movie automatically plays when opened or not is determined by the QuickTime preferences that have been set up). Quick Time Movies

Priorty is given to original and "small" QuickTime files i.e. under 5MB. If over 5MB please send email with brief details to find out first if would be interested.
